MIDDLETOWN, Va. â The Winchester Star reports that the 13-acre Cedar Creek Campground has been purchased by the American Battlefield Trust (ABT). The campground property, located along Cedar Creek, was a major site of fighting in the Battle of Cedar Creek on Oct. 19, 1864, a Union victory that pitted Lt. Gen. Jubal Early’s Confederates against Maj. Gen. Phil Sheridan’s Union forces. The Trust aims to preserve the property as part of the historic battlefield, adding to the 1,500 acres currently owned by the Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historic Park, Belle Grove Inc., the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Cedar Creek Battlefield Foundation, the Shenandoah Valley Battlefield Foundation and Shenandoah County. Less than half of the core battlefield is preserved.
The Cedar Creek Campground, located off Valley Pike (U.S. 11), was built in 1978, and had fallen into disrepair. Tenants and their trailers on the property were moved off after the sale. ABT intends to eventually transfer the property to the National Park Service.
