Only Minor Injuries In Earthquake 20 Miles from Coachella

The 3.9 magnitude earthquake that jolted the Coachella Valley Sunday was centered two miles from Sky Valley on the edge of Joshua Tree National Park, less than 20 miles away from the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio. Sunday's quake hit at 5:46 p.m. and it was centered just inside Joshua Tree National Park, or more than 8 miles north-northeast of Thousand Palms, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It had a reported depth of nearly 5 miles.
There were no reports of damage. But social media exploded with comments from people from San Diego to Montclair to Twentynine Palms who reported feeling it, according to the USGS's website.
According to the Southern California Earthquake Data Center, 32 people suffered minor injuries and the temblor was felt as far away as San Diego, Santa Barbara, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Phoenix. Despite its strength, experts say the Joshua Tree earthquake is somewhat forgotten because the magnitude 7.3 Landers earthquake followed two months later and wreaked havoc in the High Desert. Three people died in the Landers Earthquake - including a 3-year-old boy - and as many as 400 others were injured.
