ALBANY, N.Y. â New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office announced that Moreau Lake State Park, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, will expand by 131 acres, bringing it to a total of 6,100 acres, nearly nine times its original size. Set in a significant habitat of a Hemlock-Northern Hardwood ecological community, the park is a designated Bird Conservation Area, recognized by Audubon as an Important Bird Area. The park is popular destination for watching bald eagles, which winter along the Hudson River.
The new parcel includes multiple summits, including Palmertown Mountain, offering views of the Hudson Valley and southern Adirondack Mountains. It also expands the park's trail network, with a new trailhead and parking area at the Sherman Island Boat Launch and expanded long-distance hiking options, including the planned Palmertown Range trail, linking the park to Saratoga Springs. In addition to its sandy beach and campground, Moreau Lake includes nearly 40 miles of nature, hiking and cross-country ski trails, and is a popular destination for boating, fishing and ice fishing.
