New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced a surge in attendance at state park campgrounds in 2019, with campsites, cabins, cottages and yurts hosting guests for a total of 680,533 nights, through Columbus Day. The previous record of 663,953 nights was set in 2018.
The governor’s statement pointed to the 50 percent discount on fees, announced on Aug. 1, at more than 30 campgrounds, parks and boat launches along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence, a region affected by flooding earlier in the year, as fueling the surge, attracting 36,000 additional visitors to the region. Upgrades in campgrounds, new full-service cabins and the opening of new parks are cited as other factors contributing to the record numbers.
