ASHBURN, Va. â The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) released the results of its third annual "Americans’ Engagement with Parks Report" examining the importance of public parks in the lives of Americans. In addition, 2018’s study looked at American's level of interest in improving access to high-quality park and recreation facilities, and at support for local officials who advocate for parks and their increased funding.
Based on responses by 1,000 Americans ages 18 and over, the study found that Americans typically visit their local parks and recreation facilities more than twice a month. Three in four Americans live within a 10-minute walk of a local park with 85% supporting the “10-Minute Walk Campaign,” a project that aims to ensure that every person has access to a park within a 10-minute walk from home. More than 9 out of 10 agree that providing and maintaining parks and recreation is an important service of local government, while 76% are more likely to vote for local politicians who make park and recreation funding a priority.
