News Blip: Hipcamp Breaks Barriers
Fast Company Reports On Hipcamp, A Campsite Hosting Hub, And Its Relief Efforts To Those Seeking Sanctuary After The Northern California Wildfires
Just like houses are being rented out for shelter for the traveler on a weekend or longer vacation or road trip, we've come into the age where privately owned land is now available for purchase by campers! Facilitating this trend is the online site called Hipcamp. Land owners can join and start hosting space for nomads, wanderers, backpackers, campers, RVers, or just any outdoor enthusiast to settle upon. Hipcamp hopes to get more people outside and inspire future generations to do so also while concerning themselves with protecting our lands.
According to Tom Roston, wrter for Fast Company, "Simone Mosely, a 28-year-old mother of two who was attending a hip-hop conference in Atlanta when the California fires broke out, immediately mobilized. With the approval of her boss, the land’s owner of Chanslor Ranch, MobileRVing staff Wang, she opened the gates and has been hosting up to 40 people at a time since using Hipcamp." Mosely and Hipcamp CEO and founder, Alyssa Ravasio, blew the bugle to open up private campsites to provide free refuge for those fleeing the fires. By opening up private land, "Hipcamp is trying to change flyover country into a big welcome mat." Ravasio says, “We’re creating community across the political divide and the consistent geographical line that marks the split, usually between rural and urban."
