WASHINGTON – U.S. Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt recently announced that David Vela will serve as the deputy director for operations, as well as hold the exercised authority of the director of the National Park Service (NPS) beginning Oct. 1, 2019.
Vela has served as the superintendent of Grand Teton National Park & the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway since 2014. He previously served as associate director for Workforce, Relevancy and Inclusion in the NPS Washington headquarters offices. “David Vela brings nearly 30 years of valuable experience working for the National Park Service in a number of key leadership roles,” said Bernhardt, in a NPS press release. “I am confident that he will continue to serve the American people well in his new capacity.”
