The Houston Chronicle reports that the Houston City Council recently approved a grant submission that will allow Housing Director Tom McCasland to request funds from the Texas General Land Office. The money will go toward properties affected by the 2016 Tax Day Flood and flooding that occurred in May and June that year. The Houston housing department seeks $23.5 million in federal disaster recovery funding to buy properties that repeatedly flooded in 2016.
According to Houston Chronicle writer Jasper Scherer, "The city is likely to begin receiving funds in early 2019, after negotiating a contract with the Land Office later this year." As an example of prone properties, a home (pictured to the right) that was bought out by Harris County on the 2600 Block of Shorewick Drive was the first to be demolished after being flooded during Harvey Friday, Nov. 10, 2017, in Highlands, Texas. The properties will be demolished and the land purchased will be used for green space to absorb water in future floods.
