GOULDSBORO, Maine â The Ellsworth American, a news outlet in Maine, reports that Roxanne Quimby, who founded natural product company Burt’s Bees in 1984, plans to restore the former Ocean Wood Campground in Birch Harbor which closed in 2010. Quimby bought the overgrown 113-acre site with 3,200 feet of ocean frontage in 2016. A noted conservationist, the Maine resident told the paper that she felt she should honor the tradition of camping on the land, rather than just close it off, but wants the campground to have a minimal environmental impact. In recent summers, Ocean Wood’s regulars campers have helped clear the old campground in return for free camping at rustic sites.
Quimby is assisted in her effort to revive the campground by architect Todd Saunders, a native of Newfoundland, where he designed the unique 29-room Fogo Island Inn. Saunders and Quimby envision three levels of camping on the Ocean Wood site: oceanfront wilderness sites with a porta-potty, accessed by foot; simple wooden “glamping” cabins, built by hand; and sites for small pop-up campers. Sites for RVs are not planned as several full hookup campgrounds are located nearby. “I want to keep it simple,” Quimby said. “I don’t want this to have any snob appeal. I want something that is unique, interesting and comfortable yet very affordable.”
