INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Allison Transmission, the world's largest manufacturer of fully automatic transmissions for medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, announced plans to build a Vehicle Environmental Test facility on the campus of its global headquarters on the west side of Indianapolis in the town of Speedway. The facility, the first of its kind in the Midwest, and one of the few in the country, will have two environmental chambers capable of simulating temperature extremes, altitude, and on-road conditions. Engineers will be able to test vehicles for regulatory compliance, new on-board diagnostics and other performance improvements as well as propulsion systems, including conventional powertrains, alternative fuel, electric hybrid and fully-electric vehicles, under a wide range of conditions. Third parties will be able to use the chamber for their own testing, when Allison techs aren’t using the facility.
Allison transmissions are used in a variety of applications including motorhomes. “Industries around the globe depend on Allison Automatics to power highly specialized vehicles that must perform under all kinds of extreme conditions,” David Graziosi, president and CEO of Allison Transmission, said in a press release. “The Vehicle Environmental Test facility will provide Allison engineers with enhanced capabilities to conduct testing replicating vehicle environments and duty cycles.” The facility is expected to be completed in 2020.
