ORLANDO, Fla. – More than one-third of Americans - 112.5 million travelers - will take to the nation’s roads, airlines and railroads this holiday season, according to a recent AAA report. Of those, more than 102 million will be traveling by car, creating lengthy delays in many metropolitan areas, according to INRIX, a global mobility analytics company. The record-breaking number represents a 4.4 percent increase over last year and is the highest on record since AAA began tracking holiday travel.
INRIX predicts that drivers will experience more than three times the normal congestion in the days leading up to the holiday week – starting on Wednesday, December 19 – as commuters and holiday travelers join on the nation’s highways. Drivers in Atlanta, New York City, Boston and Houston will be most affected. The surge in travel is being fueled by a recent drop in gas prices, with prices at the pump averaging $2.46 for the first week of December, two cents per gallon less than one year ago.
