WHISKEYTOWN, Calif. – Located just off the I-5 in northern California, the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area (NRA) suffered devastating damage during the Carr Fire, which began on July 23 and burned an estimated 96 percent of the park despite aggressive efforts by the National Park Service (NPS) and CalFire. The NPS has now begun a phased reopening of areas within the park, popular for non-motorized boating activities on the 32,000 acre Whiskytown Lake as well as for fishing, hiking, mountain biking and other outdoor activities.
At this time the visitor center (open daily from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.); the Carr Powerhouse area; lakeshore access from the pullouts on the east side of Whiskey Creek Road, East Beach, the Shasta Divide Nature Trail; and Whiskey Creek boat launch and picnic area are open for day use only. Whiskeytown Lake is open to boating, swimming, fishing, and water skiing. John F. Kennedy Memorial Drive, Page Bar Road and Mule Town Road are open to traffic, however all pull-offs, parking lots and trails located along those roads are closed, except for the East Beach parking area on JFK Memorial Drive. Entrance passes will not be required until further notice.
