Sustainable Camp Glenorchy Opens in New Zealand
Stuff Reports On The Opening Of The Country's First Campground With Net Zero Energy Accommodations At Camp Glenorchy, Located on Lake Wakatipu At The Base Of The Richardson & Humboldt Mountains.
Stuff, a travel and lifestyle publication based in New Zealand, reports that Camp Glenorchy, which opened this month, offers the country’s first Net Zero Energy accommodations, with the use of solar power among other energy-saving techniques. The campground was according to the principles of the Living Building Challenge, a global effort that urges people everywhere to create living places with sustainable features. Owners Paul and Debbi Brainerd used innovative systems and energy-efficient and recycled building materials, including wood from post-quake Christchurch, in the building process. The designs of our buildings are deeply connected to the land and respectful of the surrounding environment. Throughout the site, guests will discover creative touches from New Zealand artists and craftspeople that both educate and delight.
Camp Glenorchy will use up to 50% less energy and water than similar facilities, thanks to composting toilets, LED bulbs, ground-source heat pumps, deep heat bores and solar thermal collectors. Camp Glenorchy is located on Lake Wakatipu, at the base of the Richardson and Humboldt mountains on New Zealand’s South Island. Amenities for camping include shared kitchen facilities, free wifi, free bicycle storage, electric vehicle charging station, and spectacular mountain views.
