The quarterly RVIA-commissioned forecast, RV RoadSigns, projects that RV shipments through the end of 2019 will be down 16.9 percent from 2018 totals, as actual numbers dip to 402,100 units from 483,700 last year. Overall, towable RVs have decreased about 10 percent and motorhome shipments are down nearly 15 percent, with park model RVs showing an increase of nearly 17 percent.
RV RoadSigns, authored by independent RV industry analyst Richard Curtin, director of Surveys of Consumers at the University of Michigan, also predicts that in 2020 these trends will ease, with the most likely scenario (60 percent probability) seeing a decline of RV shipments of 3.9 percent to 386,400 units. Dr. Curtin forecasts that the decline in RV shipments will be moderated by favorable trends in wages, jobs, inflation and interest rates, but could be offset by consumer uncertainty about the economy due to political concerns and policy issues such as tariffs and regulations.
