The Fort Wayne RV & Camping Show took place this past week February 1-4, 2018. The RV show welcomed visitors of all ages. If it were up to Amelia Holloway's daughters – a 7-year-old and 4-year-old twins – the family's next camper will need one feature to pass their criteria: bunk beds. “They love looking at the bunkhouses,” she said Sunday in the waning hours of the 2018 Fort Wayne RV & Camping Show. More than 12,000 people attended the four-day event – a number that “thrilled” show director Matt Rose after two record-setting years. With 10 recreational vehicle dealers at Memorial Coliseum, the 58th annual show offered attendees options for every camping style and budget, from travel trailers to Class A motorhomes, Rose said. Special pricing offers – such as $1,500 discounts and $20 down to lock in the show price – were aplenty.
Judging by the numerous sold signs Sunday afternoon, people came to buy. Attendees usually fall into two camps, Rose said. The majority are RV owners seeking something new, perhaps due to growing families, he said, while many others are lured by curios-ity. Rose was unsurprised young couples and families populated the event because the age of the average RV buyer has fallen from 49 to 45 in recent years. Rather than spend discretionary income on material goods, younger shoppers want to invest in ex-periences, he said, such as opportunities to connect with nature and get away from everyday stress by buying an RV. “It's about escape, relaxation and adventure,” Rose said, adding his industry is about making memories. As shoppers exited RVs, they often shared their review. One child deemed a model “too small” while a man declared another “a thumbs down.” For Lorie Krauss of Hoagland, owning a camper is a dream, she said, noting she grew up with one. Her family enjoys coming to the RV show, she said, noting her sons James, 5, and Jacob, 10, like exploring the vehicles. “And they like to hide in the cubbies,” she said. Holloway didn't expect her family to buy a camper Sunday but, she said, “It's always nice to look.”
