State and federal agencies, nonprofit organizations and the recreation industry are teaming up to host the annual National Get Outdoors Day (GO Day) to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun across the nation on June 9, 2018. Founded in 2008, GO Day aims to reach under-served populations and attract first-time visitors to public lands, with a focus on reconnecting young people to the great outdoors. GO Day events offer a family friendly mix of information centers and “active fun” areas where guests, especially kids, can use a fishing pole, go geocaching, help pitch a tent and more as well as photo opportunities with Smokey Bear, Woodsy Owl and other outdoor mascots. A list of participating sites across the country can be found on the National Get Outdoors Day website.
One state where Get Outdoors Day will get special emphasis is New York, where it’s part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's Adventure NY initiative. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) are teaming up to host family-friendly events at 30 locations across the state, including a variety of guided programs, self-guided tours, and demonstrations from 10 am to 3 pm. Participants can try out recreation activities such as fishing, paddling, hiking, biking, bird watching, archery, nature photography, geocaching, disc golf, and camping, as well as learn about outdoor safety.
A full list of activities and state park locations can be found on the press release announcing the event.
