MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY - The National Park Service (NPS) announced three major road construction projects at Yellowstone National Park in 2020 that will reduce the park’s deferred maintenance backlog, currently estimated at $586 million, but close roads and cause delays during the busy summer season. Due to the severe winter weather in the park, road construction can only take place April through early November. “Our staff does an amazing job planning and implementing these road projects to maximize improvements while minimizing the impacts to visitors and gateway communities,” Park Superintendent Cam Sholly said in a press release. “These construction projects are critical to improving safety, access, and visitor experience along Yellowstone’s roads.” The six miles of the road between Tower Fall and Chittenden Road will be completely closed until April 2022, due to a project that will widen the road and provide additional pullouts and parking at Tower Fall General Store and the Tower Fall overlook. The North Entrance will add an additional lane and kiosk to improve traffic flow and improve pedestrian safety in a project that should be completed by 2022. The third project, expected to be completed in 2020, takes place along the East Entrance Road from Fishing Bridge to Indian Pond. A 1902 earthen causeway there will be replaced with a viaduct to allow the wetland and creek to flow freely.
