Great Smoky Mountains National Park needs help from volunteers to keep the order and enjoyment for its swarms of visitors. The request for volunteers comes as Great Smoky Mountains National Park hit yet another attendance record in 2019 and is working with a shrinking staff. The park has lost 19% of its workforce over the past decade, said park spokeswoman Dana Soehn.
Knox News writer, Karen Chavez, covers in her article, "The Great Smokies saw a record 12.5 million visitors in 2019, a nearly 10% increase from the 11.4 million people who visited in 2018, making it the most visited national park in the country." With a shrinking staff the Smokies relies more and more on volunteers, Soehn explained. Last year, a record 3,800 people volunteered their time at visitor centers, campgrounds, doing trail maintenance and litter cleanup and traffic control and visitor roadside assistance.
