Yellowstone National Park's Steamboat Geyser erupted for the 48th time this year on Dec. 26. The number of eruptions Steamboat Geyser erupted in 2019 set a new record. This year Steamboat Geyser erupted 48 times, which eclipses the previous record set last year of 29.
John Sherer of KPAX covers in his article, “This is sort of classic behavior for a geyser,” said Yellowstone Volcano Observatory Chief Scientist Dr. Michale Poland. Poland isn't talking about breaking records -- he says the big lesson is that geysers are completely unpredictable. “Most geysers don't behave like Old Faithful,” Dr. Poland said. Steamboat Geyser's maze of channels, cracks and ever changing water flows is just too complex to detect eruptions with current equipment. Steamboat is the tallest active geyser in the world. Eruptions generate so much water that it nearly floods the nearby Tantalus Creek.
