The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) reopened 13 of its 30 rest stops and Turnpike commission reopened all 17 of its service plazas Friday morning, on a limited basis. As well as reopening indoor facilities at 23 select rest areas across Pennsylvania to all motorists. PennDOT spokeswoman Alexis Campbell said in a statement that the sites will have five portable toilets, though the services plazas themselves will remain closed due to a lack of cleaning staff. In a press release, Turnpike spokeswoman Rosanne Placey relayed: “We realize how vital [truckers’] service is so we’re happy we can reopen even on a limited basis. Even with this change, the food service will be open on a limited basis. We can’t have a lot of people there and they can’t eat inside.” Pennsylvania is a major contributor to the nation’s economy and its location between the Northeast region and markets in the South and Midwest means countless truckers move across the state each day, according to a PennDOT statement.
