The Berlin Daily Sun Reports On The Correlation Between The Nation's GDP And The Revenue And Jobs Generated From The Outdoors Business
Since late last year, Congress has passed a law that indicates the Outdoor Recreation Industry is now included in the nation's GDP. With the GDP being a major indicator of economic performance, this shows how much value is in outdoor activities and jobs. Consumer spending in this sector, along with jobs created and taxes accrued, has grown significantly in the New England area. New Hampshire officials in the Outdoor Industry have focused their attention on maintaining the upkeep of the White Mountain National Forest, the grounds for a plethora of outdoor recreational activities.
As Berlin Daily Sun writer Rachel Brown relays in her article: “We have seen a 15 percent increase for the last three years,” said Tiffany Benna, public affairs officer and Freedom of Information coordinator for the U.S. Forest Service in the White Mountain National Forest. Benna said some of the increase is attributed to lower gas prices and more people choosing to be outdoors. To help pay for the services and maintenance, some of which is year-round, New Hampshire has a recreation fee/pass for some sites.
