News Blip: Bike Sharing In The Twin Cities
Star Tribune Reports On Nice Ride Minnesota's Dockless Bike Model Where Bikes Can Be Rented Wherever Users Find Them & Left/Locked Up Wherever Their Trip Ends
Getting a ride when you need it is the way of the future. As we saw, Uber revolutionized the transportation industry with convenient and inexpensive lifts to where you need to go. Can public transportation be next? For example, people who use public bikes to commute, or bike rentals. At the beginning of November, biking enthusiasts attended a public forum to listen in on ideas from Nice Ride Minnesota - a seasonal nonprofit bicycle sharing system - about transitioning to a new way of operating — dockless bike sharing.
Janet Moore of The Star Tribune relays in her article: "Nice Ride currently rents 1,850 of its signature green bikes from about 200 stations throughout the Twin Cities. Those who rent the bikes are expected to return them to any Nice Ride station." However, can the process be simpler for riders? Nice Ride put out a request-for-proposals last summer to find potential operators of a new dockless bike system. A way fro users to easily return the public bikes. A new system is expected to be approved in coming weeks.Representatives from the two finalists, New York-based Motivate International Inc. and California-based LimeBike, each made presentations and answered questions from the audience at the pubic forum meeting.
