Newport Academy’s new therapy tool has been helping teens recover from their mental health problems and substance abuse issues. This new therapy technique, called adventure therapy, uses nature coupled with physical activities to stimulate psychological change. "Adventure therapy helps kids learn to be in the moment, be in their own skin, and trust themselves, as well as their peers,” says Tim Walsh, the Director of Experiential Learning for Newport Academy.
Moreover, physical activities such as kayaking, rock climbing, and hiking are combined with team building exercises which boost their problem solving and decision making skills. “Adventure therapy offers kids an individualized journey that helps them discover who they want to become, and begin to move toward that vision of themselves,” Walsh said.
