The Las Vegas Sun reports that Nevada is on track to extend WiFi coverage throughout its state park system. Hotspots are being developed by outdoor connectivity specialist Viasat, using its advanced ViaSat-1 and ViaSat-2 satellite systems, paired with a dedicated WiFi services platform. The WiFi rollout will focus first on Nevada’s most visited parks, such as Cathedral Gorge, Valley of Fire, Echo Canyon and Big Bend of the Colorado State Parks. The system currently includes some two dozen parks, several with multiple units.
The WiFi project is part of Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval’s Explore Your Nevada initiative announced in his State of the State speech in 2017. Other improvements now underway in the state park system include the addition of full hook-up campsites at seven existing parks and pull-through campsites at ten existing parks, as well as the development of several new parks.
“We’re proud to be the first U.S. state to announce our commitment to put WiFi in all of our state parks,” Eric Johnson, Nevada State Parks administrator, said in a statement. “Our long-term goal is to ensure the millions of park guests that visit our locations each year have access to the same consistent high-speed, high-quality connectivity WiFi service park-to-park, providing a true value when visiting parks across our state.”
