The KOA 2018 North American Camping Report found that 2.6 million new North American households went camping in 2017, with more than 6 million adopting the camping lifestyle since 2014. Avid campers - those who camp three or more times a year - increased by 64% with campers at all experience levels and among all ethnicities expressing the desire to camp more in 2018. About 45 percent plan to increase camping trips in 2018, an increase of 3 percent from last year’s report, while 39 percent of new campers in 2017 will go camping more in 2018.
The study found that technology and social media are being used to find helpful information both prior to and during the camping experience. Campers say access to cell or Wi-Fi service has a great deal of impact on the length of their trips, allowing them to enjoy almost a full extra week of camping. This year’s report continues to show people view camping as a time to relax, escape stress and clear their minds. The 2018 North American Camping Report is an annual independent study supported by Kampgrounds of America, Inc. (KOA).
