Outdoor industry execs and advocates can now conveniently measure every member of Congress based on their voting records, favorable or unfavorable legislation they sponsor and their overall support or opposition of outdoor industry policy priorities. That new digital tool was unveiled July 23 at Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in Denver, and has been called the “OIA Congressional Scorecard – The Official Scorecard of the Outdoor Recreation Industry.” OIA released its scorecard as it announced a broader Vote the Outdoors campaign during the conference, which is occurring as we speak until July 26.
The OIA press release explains the scorecard in more detail. "OIA’s Vote the Outdoors program includes an interactive tool on the OIA website for visitors to use to look up their elected representatives’ grades on the OIA Congressional Scorecard. The platform also arms visitors with social media and other tools to help them become more informed voters and laud or challenge their representatives for their votes and support for the outdoor industry." It's a great idea that suits well with today's digital age and easy access the internet on our phones. Let's face it, most voters cannot keep up with each candidate and their stances, so this tool can inform people on who they would like to vote for, as well as give them more confidence while inside the booths. "Voters want to know and need a resource where they can find how their representatives voted on issues like the Land and Water Conservation Fund, climate change and the protection of our public land,” said Alex Boian, OIA’s political director.
