DETROIT, Mich. â With a new, high tech towing package, Chevrolet hopes to make its 2019 Silverado pickups the go-to choice for hauling trailers, fifth wheels and other tow-behinds. Chevy’s Advanced Trailering System (ATS), standard on LTZ and High Country-trim Silverado pickups and an option on Trail Boss, LT and RST trims, includes Hitch Guidance with Hitch View providing a dynamic backing guideline on the Rear Vision Camera system to help customers line up their hitch; an Auto Parking Brake Assist which automatically keeps the truck stationary when put in park; and the Trailer Tire Pressure Monitoring System, to monitor the pressure and temperature of trailer tires, plus an all-new camera system providing views from 3 on-board cameras.
The ATS smartphone app allows drivers to track the mileage, fuel economy and transmission temperature of their truck while towing; gives fingertip control of the trailer brakes; and activates a Trailer Theft Alert system, an industry first. In addition, new trailer-specific features on the myChevrolet smartphone app let drivers conduct a trailer light test and offer pre-departure step-by-step towing checklists. The driver’s side door jamb on all Silverados will have an industry-first trailering label providing information the pickup’s exact towing capacities.
The new features are intended to give customers more confidence when towing, easier trailer hitching and improved connectivity between the truck and trailer. “Ultimately, these technologies serve to eliminate common pain points of towing and help provide customers with a less stressful experience while trailering,” Tim Herrick, executive chief engineer of Full-Size Trucks, General Motors, said in a press release.
