SPRINGFIELD, Ill. â The Daily Journal of Kankakee, Illinois, reports that the Chippewa and Potawatomi campgrounds at Kankakee River State Park in northeastern Illinois are slated to reopen in spring, 2019. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has allocated $1.9 million to reopen the campgrounds which have been closed since 2015. At Chippewa, planned improvements include demolishing two waste water plants, replacing one treatment plant, and constructing a holding tank. At Potawatomi, plans call for remodeling and doubling the number of showers and toilets.
Together the two campgrounds provide over 200 campsites for visitors and their lengthy closure has had a negative effect on the local economy. State Rep. Lindsay Parkhurst, who worked to obtain the funding, said in a release quoted by the Daily Journal: “The park is the jewel in the crown of Kankakee County and reopening the Chippewa and Potawatomi campgrounds will restore our park to its former glory and grow the area.’’
Other Illinois State Parks receiving funds for improvements include: Fort Massac State Park (to stabilize its timber-framed replica fort); Argyle Lake State Park (dam and boat ramp improvements); Mississippi Palisades State Park; the I & M Canal; and Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area.
