WELLFLEET, Mass. â The Wellfleet Wicked Local News reports that the former Paine’s Campground reopens Memorial Day weekend as the Wellfleet Hollow State Campground, operated by the Massachusetts Dept. of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). The WickedLocal says the state purchased the 28 acres last year for $3.6 million from the Paine family which had occupied the property for 60 years. The state has made improvements to infrastructure on the property, including roads, fire rings, parking areas and water lines, and converted the Paine’s former summer home into a camp office with accessible bathrooms.
The Wellfleet Hollow State Campground has 107 tent/pop-up campsites, renting for $22/night for Massachusetts residents and $35 for out-of-state residents, plus surcharges for water and electric hookups. According to Department of Conservation and Recreation Commissioner Leo Roy, the state made an effort to preserve the campground’s original charm. “The DCR is extremely excited to open Wellfleet Hollow State Campground this year, and we are proud of our efforts to maintain the quiet, quaint nature of this amazing family-friendly campground,” Roy said in a press release.
