Medium.com reports that a prototype Tesla camper made its world debut at the recent electric vehicle ride and drive event sponsored by the Michigan Energy Office in Lansing, Mich. Dubbed the Tesla Roamer, the camper, which can do 150 mph on the flat, was designed and produced by author and TV host Travis Rabenberg who has big plans for his new vehicle. He tells Medium that he hopes to break the Guinness World Land Speed Record for an electric motorhome, as well as for motorhomes in general, currently held by a Fiat Doblo van conversion clocked at 141.3 mph in 2014. To promote sustainable travel, Travis will drive the Roamer across the U.S. this fall and, in 2020, drive from England to Dubai, where his motorhome will lead the parade of electric vehicles into the World Expo 2020.
According to Rabenberg’s website, the Roamer is built on a Tesla Model S 70D with a pop-up camper top which folds down for travel. The electric engine generates 300 hp and has a range of 200 miles on a single charge. The modified camper section includes a bed, sink and toilet, with a 20 gallon water tank on board. Solar panels mounted on the roof generate 300 watts of power to run laptops and other items.
