CARP LAKE, Mich. - MichiganLive announces that the West Lakeshore Loop campground at Wilderness State Park, which sprawls across 10,000 acres along the shoreline at the tip of Michigan’s mitten, opens for camping on June 20. The renovated campground at the Lower Peninsula’s largest state park will accept reservations beginning Jan. 9. Reservations for dates between June 20 and July 9 can be made Jan. 9; but for dates after July 9, reservations can be made starting six months from one’s arrival date - a standard protocol at Michigan’s state parks.
MichiganLive writer Emily Bingham speaks with Burr Mitchell, unit supervisor at Wilderness State Park, who said in her article: "The campground recently underwent upgrades to better accommodate the way people camp now - as opposed to how we camped in the 1950â²s, when this particular campground was designed. This campground was built when a 30-foot trailer was ‘big,’ and that is not the case anymore," he said. During the renovations, the number of sites at the west loop campground were reduced from 75 to 71, allowing for a few larger sites that can handle more substantial RVs. The upgrades also include new underground water and electric lines, two new wells, and improved roadways to give the park more flexibility for handling traffic.
