NPS Officials Avert A Temporary Closure of Joshua Tree National Park
Editor's Note: This news item was retrieved and first published through National Park Service's website.
National Park Service officials have determined that by using Federal Land and Recreation Enhancement funds to immediately bring back park maintenance crews to address sanitation issues, Joshua Tree National Park will be able to maintain some visitor services, including reopening the campgrounds inside the park. A closure had been previously scheduled for January 10. All areas that have been recently closed were made accessible to park visitors starting on Thursday, January 10, and can be seen here.
According to the press release, Joshua Tree will employ additional staff to ensure the protection of park resources and mitigate some of the damage that has occurred during the lapse of appropriations. Outdoor areas of the park will remain accessible. Most facilities will remain closed with the exception of the Joshua Tree Visitor Center at 6554 Park Boulevard, owned and operated by the Joshua Tree National Park Association. Oasis Visitor Center, Cottonwood Visitor Center, and Black Rock Nature Center will remain closed for the duration of the lapse in appropriations.
