The Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA) is the largest association of professional outdoor communicators in the United States. OWAA’s members include writers, photographers, outdoors radio hosts, television-show hosts, book authors, videographers, lecturers and artists, all focusing on the great outdoors and what it has to offer! The association is headquartered in Missoula, Montana. OWAA is now accepting applications for its Bodie McDowell Scholarship until March 1, 2018. The Bodie McDowell Scholarship program is open to all college students from all communications and journalism disciplines and all schools. Candidates should have clear, significant goals in outdoor communications.
According to the press release, OWAA has awarded more than $130,000 in scholarships since 2010. Since 1966, OWAA’s endowment trustees have distributed funds to college scholarship recipients in accordance with OWAA bylaws. The Bodie McDowell Scholarship Fund will award up to $22,500 to outstanding students for the 2018-19 academic year. Individual awards typically range from $1,000 to $5,000. Each scholarship awardee also receives a complimentary one-year student membership with OWAA, which includes a one-year subscription to OWAA’s magazine, Outdoors Unlimited, access to member discounts and job listings, plus the chance to earn conference registration scholarships. This annual award honors Bodie McDowell, an OWAA member since 1961, a past OWAA President (1971-72) and a retired outdoors newspaper editor who worked for the Greensboro News & Record.
