San Francisco Chronicle Reports On Travelers Seeking Deeper Connections With The Cities They Visit By Taking Part In Experiential Tourism
A trend In travel has prompted open-minded adventurers who are visiting a new city or country to be more involved with the cultural events and people of that location. As opposed to just following the map and sight-seeing mainstream attractions, these creative individuals are seeking out unique, engaging activities. The term coining this movement is experiential tourism. San Francisco has seen gatherings in places like Baker Beach in which tourists have found unforgettable experiences.
San Francisco Chronicle writer Spud Hilton relates in his article: "The workout-slash-dance party (creatively titled “Sunset Silent Disco Yoga”) is one of dozens of options offered in the Bay Area by home-share giant Airbnb as part of Trips, its new platform for finding local experiences to go along with lodging." Airbnb has developed a similar concept in which one can book relatively inexpensive getaways to enjoy a vacation. Last week, Airbnb released its own travel magazine, Airbnbmag — the pilot issue focuses on some lesser-known destinations, immersive experiences, personal stories and, predictably, a roundup of lakeside villas that can be booked on Airbnb.
