Michigan State Parks Celebrate Centennial Year
Editor's Note: This news item was retrieved and first published through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources's website.
The Michigan State Park Commission, precursor to Michigan's state parks system, was established by the Michigan Legislature on May 12, 1919. Today that system includes 103 state parks spread across the state and they will all be celebrating this year. Michigan’s Dept. of Natural Resources had set up a special website to connect visitors and residents to the centennial celebrations and many planned events. A special Memory Map encourages people to share their memories and photos about Michigan state parks visits through the years.
Other sections of the Centennial website tell stories drawn from the history of the parks, ranging from the auto industry’s impact on outdoor recreation to tales of Babe Ruth getting caught doing some out-of-season fishing, as well as retrospective videos. Storytelling plays an important part in the celebration, with special campfire story sessions planned at parks throughout the summer.
For more information and an update on planned celebrations, visit the special Centennial webpage.
