COLUMBUS, Ind. & SEOUL, Korea - Korean car maker, Hyundai Motor Company and Cummins Inc. have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop and commercialize new powertrains combining Hyundai’s cutting edge fuel cell systems with Cummins’ industry-leading electric powertrain, battery, and control technologies. “With Hyundai’s global leadership in fuel cell systems coupled with Cummins’ unparalleled electrified powertrain technologies, we expect this partnership to leave a mark in the commercial vehicle market,” Saehoon Kim, vice president and head of the Fuel Cell Group at Hyundai, said in a news release. The collaboration will initially focus on the North American commercial vehicle market, working with North American OEMs on the integration of these systems into their vehicles. A team drawn from both companies will investigate other areas of collaboration, as well. Hyundai released the world’s first commercial hydrogen-powered vehicle, the Tucson Fuel Cell, in 2015 and currently produces the NEXO, an SUV that emits clean water vapor and even purifies the air while driving. In 2018, Cummins launched its Electrified Power business division, which designs and manufactures fully electric and hybrid powertrain systems.
