Brushy Creek Campground near Lake O' The Pines is now recovering after severe storms that passed through the East Texas Area while the campground was at full capacity. 40-year-old Mary Pinney of Mt. Belvieu Texas was killed when a tree fell on her family's tent. Clean up for the Brushy Creek Campground has started, but cleaning up will be a little difficult, because the number of tree's that fell down has created more damage to the campsite than expected. 238 people were there when the Texas storm hit. Matt Seavey, Acting Lake Manger at Lake O' The Pines says,"now there's a lot of hanging limbs and a lot of broken off trees and a lot of up rooted one's still haven't fallen, so we just want everyone to stay safe." Mary's husband was seriously injured and taken to an area hospital, along with a handful of other people with minor injuries. The couple's three children made it out without any injuries. More than 200 tree's were knocked over, while some landed on campers, tents and vehicles.
KTAL News writer Zyneria Byrd relates in her article: Seavey says, "we didn't have a lot of mid stem snaps or anything like that, it was just that the whole tree just fell over, because of the saturated ground." The National Weather Service says the damage is from straight line winds at an estimated 80-90 miles per hour. One man who lives across the street from the campsite stated he was thankful he didn't get the same amount of damage as the Texas campground. Brushy Creek Campground is closed until repairs are complete and they can ensure the park is safe again.
