The Washington Post's Josh Hicks Reports On The National Park Service And Their Decision On Assateague Island
Assateague Island, located off the coast of Maryland, has recently been covered under 6 feet of sand burying 10 campsites. This phenomenon, however, is no surprising news. The National Park Service saw this coming a long time ago. Now the decision remains: restore the island or let nature run its course?
“The idea that you can hold an island in place is kind of fraught with difficulties, especially with a wild and undeveloped island such as Assateague,” Fehrer said. “It’s important to maintain a viable and robust visitor experience with the realization that the island isn’t static.”
The National Park Service is expected to make a final decision by this winter.
