MIAMI, Fla. - Representatives from park and recreation agencies across the country met in Miami, Florida in January for the three-day 2019 Resilient Parks Innovation Lab, organized by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) in collaboration with Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces. This year’s meeting, titled Resilient Parks, explored how communities nationwide can maximize the resilience of parks and open spaces in the face of climate change and other challenges.
Miami was selected as the setting for the conference because it sits in one of the most at-risk coastal areas in the world. Attendees at the conference met with funders, policy experts and thought leaders, and made site visits to see how Miami is working to maximize the resilience of its parks and open spaces.
“We know parks build healthy, vibrant and resilient communities,” Barbara Tulipane, CAE, NRPA president and CEO, said in a press release. “That’s why we’re thrilled to host this event in Miami-Dade County where attendees can see firsthand the benefits of using parks and open spaces to improve resiliency and help protect communities from the effects of climate change.”
