After our long weekend back in the woods we were refreshed and ready for our next adventure! We were on our way to Duluth, MN! As usual, we had no official plans or expectations for this new place, but we were excited to see Lake Superior for the first time.
We arrived in Duluth with the sun was shining and the temperature was rising. We were starving and were drawn to the nearby brewery sitting on the edge of Lake Superior. We waited for a table in the shade and ordered a couple of the local brews and some decent food. We worked while we ate since we always try and use wifi when it’s available.

After lunch, we walked along the lake. Nearby in the water was a ruin of sorts that kids were climbing on and jumping off of into the lake. We almost stopped to join them, but we wanted to see what else was around.
Along our walk we passed the usual tourist traps of ice cream and fried food and we rolled our eyes at the people stopping to feed the crowds of seagulls. It was all lovely though, and we walked out to the end of a pier and couldn’t believe how big this lake really was. It was massive. If you didn’t know better, you would assume you had arrived at the ocean.
We stumbled upon a museum that talked about the lake and the various famous boats that have sailed along it. It was interesting to see the replicas of the old cabins for people traveling by boat, from the wealthy to the crew. It stirred our imaginations about future adventures by sea.

As tourists ourselves, we of course couldn’t resist the ice cream any longer and we each got waffle cones with two scoops. Delicious as it was, I definitely should have stuck with one scoop as the ice cream melted too fast for me to eat and I suddenly looked like a toddler with sticky hands, face, and even long drips of the brightly colored sweet mess all over my clothes. But, no regrets.
Duluth was an awesome city, and every corner led us to another surprise. It had a vibe that made us feel right at home. We discovered homebrewing, outdoor gear, and dog shops, all inside historic retrofitted buildings.
But, as we continued to explore, the weather drastically changed. The skies were not longer blue but grey with dark clouds streaked with lightning heading our way. Still, we were not done yet and we took our chances to sit outside by the lake this time at a quaint little cider house. We ordered some kind of berry cider that was delicious and we watched the combination of the sunset and the storm rolling in.
We made it back to the van just in time before the storm hit, and headed out of the urban area to a smaller town that had a Walmart we would stay at for the night. We always feel better when we drive up and “our people” are already there - RVs, vans, campers, etc. Sure enough there were a few parked at the edge of the parking lot and we made our way over to join the club. Another successful day on the road and who knew what the next day would bring.
