Alaska is commonly thought of as an unspoiled wilderness, but it is actually a thriving, beautiful state with a variety of areas to see. Traversing the area by RV gives anyone the ability to experience that wonder and uniqueness up close. Throughout the state there are dozens of RV locations to stay at, but which cities and sights are simply too good to pass on getting to see firsthand? Add these locations to your RVing itinerary.
Anchorage
A first stop, and often one of the best locations to start from is Anchorage. It's a larger city with a wide range of things to do within it. A flightseeing tour is a great place to start. Also, take the time to explore the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail and the Alaska
Native Heritage Center. You can find a number of RV locations here (including places to rent them) if you've flown into the state.
Denali National Park
The trek to Denali, perhaps the most sought-after area in the state, is about 220 miles from Anchorage. There is an area at the park for RVs, but booking a spot takes months (be sure to do so in advance if you plan to stay here). However, numerous RV parks are available throughout the area. Once you get there, you'll be able to enjoy various activities including hiking and biking. Be sure to visit the Denali Visitor Center as a first stop to get a lay of the land. Then, you can explore much of this six-million-acre park as you would like to.
Prudhoe Bay
This is a beautiful area to explore especially if you want fewer crowds and excellent fishing. It's a steep climb to the top of the bay (about 450 miles up), but the views are worth it.
Fairbanks
If you are looking for another city to explore, check out Fairbanks. It's only about 125 miles from Denali (depending on your location) but it is more of a city rather than just a natural area to explore. Again, RV parks are available to meet your needs here. When in the city, spend some time checking out the smaller shops and artisan retailers. Fantastic dining is in the center of the city, too.
Copper River Valley
There's something exciting about Copper River Valley that everyone visiting this area should have a chance to explore. You'll want to access this area through the Wrangell â St. Elias National Park and Preserve. Check out the Gakona Junction Village as well. A few fantastic RV resorts are available in this area. You'll want to check out the former copper mines, the trails, and all of the small shops and restaurants here.
Other locations to visit on your trip to Alaska include a few other stops. Check out Prince William Sound by visiting Kenny Lake for some fantastic freshwater fishing. Stop by Valdez (this is a good location to end your trip heading back towards Anchorage) to explore the views.
What You Have to Do in Alaska
If you are visiting the state by RV, you may have a bit more time to explore all that this beautiful region has to offer. That's the good news. But, before you book and plan your trip, there are a few activities that are musts for anyone visiting Alaska.
⢠See (or fish) the Copper River salmon.
⢠Check out the Alaska king crab (trapping is sometimes available, but just enjoying it fresh is a wonder in itself).
⢠Go ice climbing.
⢠Ride in a float plane.
⢠Look for the wildlife including whales, orcas, puffins, polar bears and an arctic fox.
When it comes down to it, RVing through Alaska is one of those must-do activities for anyone who wants a true adventure on the road. There are some tricky areas and a solid plan is essential. However, for many, this trip will be one to remember for a lifetime
