An Oregon woman has decided to help the children of her city, particularly of HB Lee Middle School, interact with nature by sharing her passion for the outdoors and its transformative powers. Kristie Focht, founder of Oregon Youth Outreach, has went on two excursions already in October for the Adventure Club, an afternoon school program she runs with help from Metropolitan Family Services and Schools Uniting Neighborhoods.

KATU News writer Stuart Tomlinson relates in his article: "On a sunny fall day at Whitaker Ponds Nature Park, about a dozen sixth- through eighth-graders from the school were getting dirty and grubby pulling invasive English ivy." Speaking with Focht, Tomlinson finds that other more active activities or trips include hiking, mountain biking and snowshoeing. These outings are part of a once-a-month stewardship trip. Last week the group hiked to the top of Powell Butte Nature Park.
