FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) --After a nearly three-year closure, the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias in Yosemite National Park will re-open to the public this summer. The iconic Mariposa Grove has been closed since July 2015 for a landmark restoration project. The grove is home to about five-hundred mature Giant Sequoia trees which sprouted from tiny, oatmeal flake-size seeds hundreds or even thousands of years ago, and now stretch as high as 290 feet. In partnership with the Yosemite Conservancy, the National Park Service has been working to improve the overall visitor experience, including the construction of an ADA accessible boardwalk. As seen in the image, a sequoia tree has been used as sort of an "exhibit" so visotires can witness the insides up close or even get romantic under the tallest tree species in the world. Park officials announced today the Mariposa Grove will re-open on Friday, June 15th.
