Digital Trends reports how drones are also being used to help to keep swimmers safe, mainly in Australia, where officials are increasing spending on the technology to provide lifeguards. Australian research is figuring out how to pin point what is being seen in the waters, and a lot of times the objects identified as sharks are actually something else.

Digital Trends writer Trevor Mogg relates in his article: "Southern Cross University professor Brendan Kelaher and his team used drone technology to monitor the waters close to beaches in New South Wales (NSW), analyzing footage to learn  more about the various types of sea creatures that come close to the shore." Professor Kelaher is keen to acknowledge the benefits of drone technology, explaining how it’s making a valuable contribution to the ecological information required to ensure the long-term sustainability of beach ecosystems. “Our extensive data suggests it is up to 135 times more likely to be a dolphin than a shark,” Professor Kelaher said in another article. Drones are no doubt being used to help to keep swimmers safe. Drone rescue systems are also being deployed, that will be able to drop flotation devices from the sky in emergency situations.
