Staying with Family in Tenino, Washington

Chris and I currently “moochdocking” by staying on my sister, Sarah, and her husband, Eric’s, land in Tenino, Washington (near Olympia) until the end of July. They even have full hook-ups because they used to be full-time RVers themselves. They travelled for six years and were a big inspiration for us deciding to do the whole RVing thing.

Eric was a travel nurse and recently wrote an ebook about their travels called, The Adventure Nickel. They have since moved onto a new kind of adventure by buying 6 acres of land, fixing it up and getting lots of adorable baby animals like goats, chickens and ducks. It’s been awesome being neighbors with them and my sweet nephews, Michael and Max. As I am sitting outside writing this post, their rooster and hen are walking around by my feet and their baby ducks are sitting under our rig. We are big animal lovers, so of course we are loving this. We have also been joking that we have been “workamping” here but really we have just been trying to help them out a little by working in their gardens, collecting fencing and loading and unloading firewood with them.Related Read: Workamping- How to Go Where You Want
This is our first time in the Olympia area and it’s really nice. They have one of the best farmer’s markets we have been to on our travels and it is open from Thursday through Sunday every week. This weekend we went with my sister and loaded up on some fresh Washington apples and Rainier cherries. We also really enjoyed the tasty Indian restaurant at the Farmer’s Market called Curry in a Hurry.
Our first week here my sister and nephews took Chris and I to Tumwater Falls Park. We did the one-half mile scenic loop trail along the Deschutes River. There are lots of different sized waterfalls along the trail and during the fall you can see lots of salmon in the river.
We are only a couple of hours away from Mount Rainier National Park, so we decided to take a day trip up there. Chris and Eric took vacation days last week and we all did the Comet Falls trail hike together. It was a 3.8 mile round trip with an elevation gain of 900 feet. It was beautiful scenic hike. We loved all the wild white lilies and saw some adorable pikas climbing on the rocks. I must warn you this time of year there was still some snow on the ground and it was over some of the more rocky areas. I found hiking over the snow pretty scary and after a panic attack or two I finally made it to the falls. I guess sometimes you have to work a little harder to see the more beautiful places. Once we arrived at the falls we decided to enjoy the view and eat our lunch. Some cute and pesty little robber jay birds came along and tried to steal our food. The hike back to our car seemed a lot easier. We are actually feeling spoiled with the amount of gorgeous waterfalls we have seen this year.
Next weekend things around here should be getting even more fun because my parents, brother and sister-in-law (from Houston, TX ) will be staying here as well. It will be like a Washington family reunion. We are very excited to get to see everyone. Do you have any suggestions of fun places to visit while in this area? If so we would love to hear them.

We are Rachel and Chris Baumann of It rsquo;s a Wanderful RV Life. We are both from Houston, TX, which is where we met. Chris currently manages and develops custom software for the company he has worked for since 2009, but he is an artist at heart. Rachel spent 10 years in the insurance industry but now has a crochet business and sells her creations on Etsy. Never the traditionalists, we married in Vegas on 101010 and celebrated with a Halloween themed wedding reception. Wanting more than just the normal 9 to 5 jobs, we decided to sell most of our belongings and travel the U.S. with our two dogs, Remus and Samson. Our rig is a 35 rsquo; Fleetwood Bounder named Lucy. Now, we find ourselves traveling from state to state, visiting our nation rsquo;s National Parks, meeting new people, eating tasty food and checking out local craft brews and wineries. We love sharing our journey in hopes of inspiring others to do the same.
