Whether you are out on a busy holiday weekend or simply on a quiet trip to your favorite hidden campsite, safety should always be a concern. I am not talking about the safety from a world of lions, and tigers, and bears oh my…but the safety from the things you may think about at home, but forget about when you are on your vacation. The rules that apply to your family being safe and sound at home are easy to follow on the road as well. However, there are some things you may not think about that could put you at risk for burglary, petty theft, or other crimes that could have been avoided. Here are some tips to keep you and yours safe.

Love Thy Neighbor
It is important when camping to get to know your surroundings. If you are camping in a group, ask to have camping spots next to each other. If you are alone, be sure to park your coach in an angle where your doors and windows are visible to those surrounding you. Prowlers are less likely to break into a coach that is easily seen in all directions. Once you get settled, pay close attention to those camping around you and become a little more neighborly with the campers on each side of you. Not only will getting friendly with your camping neighbors benefit your safety measures but you may also reap some social benefits out of your outgoingness.

Keep Your Key Close To Your Heart…Locked
I do not know how many times I have heard people say, “I thought I had locked all of the compartments.” When you are camping and you are leaving your coach for an extended period of time, you MUST ALWAYS LOCK IT UP! Make a habit of checking the doors and the compartments before you leave the area. There are electronic locks that will lock your entire coach with the push of a button and I would recommend having a deadbolt on your entry door. Even if you think you are in the safest of places and you feel secure leaving things open…you MUST ALWAYS LOCK IT UP! Keep a spare key just in case of emergency and have easy access to the spare if you need it. Also remember to lock your windows. Even if the weather is really hot, keep them shut and locked.

Keep the Goods at Home
I know your children will be tempted to take their game systems and laptops on your trip, but that is not always the best idea. If you do need to take expensive belongings, you may want to consider having a safe and/or a security system installed in your coach. I personally need to bring my I-Pod wherever I go, therefore I either bring it with me when I leave the campground or I put it in a secure hiding spot and double check the door and window locks. Use common sense when it comes to what you leave in plain sight in your coach as well. Tempting fate and criminals is never a good idea.

“Safety first,” I always say, but that’s something we all know. It just takes a little time to plan and make sure your belongings are safe. Getting to know your neighbors and parking strategically will also keep you protected but remember the best way to stay safe is to be alert. Always keep your eyes open for warning signs and if you are unsure of a new camping spot, follow your instincts and find another. You will always be your best advantage to staying safe and sound. Happy Trails!
