Road Work: How to Make Money while Traveling

08-25-2015

By Stephanie Mayberry

I’ve read a lot of blogs and article on how people claim to earn money while traveling and, quite frankly, a lot of them are blowing smoke. However, once you get past the truth inflaters, law breakers, and folks who do scary stuff for cash, there are some gems out there. You can earn an honest day’s wage for and honest day’s work – if you know where to look.

In this series I have shared with you how I make my living as a freelance writer. I also told you how my husband earns money from more traditional jobs while on the road. In this segment I will explain some ways to follow those traditional paths. There are some amazing opportunities out there if you know where to look. These are my own awesome work on the road strategies that I have found over the years.

Work Events & Festivals

There are sites that staff festivals and special events. Do an online search for “festival jobs US” and you will see an impressive list of places to sign up. However, if you want to work with a particular company like the Smithsonian or Red Bull just include the company name in your search – and yes, those companies to have hiring sites in place. Indeed is like the Old Faithful of just about any kind of work that may be considered non-traditional or unconventional. It would pay to take a look at what they have to offer.

The International Festivals & Events Association (IFEA) has a pretty impressive list of various companies and organizations that are hiring for special events or festivals. You can go to each organization, view the various jobs on the IFEA website, or do a search to find jobs you like. Working an event or festival not only get you paid, you will also usually get free access to the event.

Interim Innkeeper

While this isn’t for everyone, some folks will take to this like a duck to water. It is a good way to earn while traveling although you should let inn owners know that you are bringing your home with you. The Interim Innkeepers Network connects temporary innkeepers with inn owners. Who knows? It might be just the opportunity for you.

Caretaker, Babysitting, Petsitting, Odd Jobs

Yep, you can find all of these types of jobs and more through Care.com. You can sign up to be a child care provider, house keeper, pet sitter, or to do odd jobs. While some of the jobs are long term, many on the site are short term, lasting from a week to several months. If you are a people person, love animals, or enjoy housekeeping, this could be the answer for you.

Become a Workamper

OK, I saved the best for last! Workamper is an absolutely awesome site that is geared to helping RV fulltimers earn on the road. You can find jobs at campgrounds, amusement parks, fairs, dude ranches, motorsports events, and the list goes on and on. The majority of these jobs are paid but many also come with free RV parking. If you are craving a little adventure and get paid for it, check out Workamper. In fact, just check it out anyway because it is an awesome resource for life on the road.

Life on the road doesn’t mean that you have to be independently wealthy to survive. You don’t have to be retired and drawing a pension. You can work although it may not be through traditional means, but then again, you’re living in an RV so you’re not all that traditional anyway. In my final segment in this MobileRving series,

Road Work, I’ll share some of my favorite links and companies for earning money online. Stay tuned and keep your eyes on the road (but don’t forget to stop and smell the roses along the way)!
