Road Work: Making Money Online

Road Work: Making Money Online

08-27-2015

By Stephanie Mayberry

The internet has made so many things a whole lot easier and making money is one of them. In this last segment of my Road Work series here on MobileRving I’ve already shared how I make money online as a writer, now I’ll share some other online money making opportunities that are good for picking up a few bucks. Keep in mind, though, this is not an exhaustive list. There are other opportunities out there – these are just some money makers that I have personally found to be particularly road worthy.

Tax Preparation

If you already know how prepare income tax returns this may be a good job for you. However, if you don’t, several of the larger tax preparation companies offer classes so you can certainly learn how to do it. Get some magnetic signage and put it on your vehicle – instant mobile billboard!

Write Custom Software

Create handy apps and software for businesses and you could find yourself with a pretty nice career. Many businesses will pay quite well for custom apps and software that make their work easier or provide their customers a service. You can do your own advertising and set up a website to find clients, or check out the freelance marketplaces I have listed below to find opportunities.

Create Web Sites

If you are good at web design you could start your own little business building web sites for individuals and companies. Set up your own website advertising your services then find clients by marketing yourself for free or for a few bucks.

E-Publishing Services

E-books are huge which means that just about anything to do with them is huge as well. Design covers, proofread, edit, or format e-books for others. Of course you can also author your own e-books; Amazon has an excellent publishing platform for Kindle.

Day Trading

Some folks do quite well with day trading, which is trading solely within a day. I personally have never done anything like this – I am not much of a gambler. If this is something you are into, though, more power to you. Investopedia has a pretty good article on beginning day trading if you need a little info to get you started.

Sell Stock Photography

If you have a good eye there is money to be made in selling stock photography. There are several website that sell stock images and you get a percentage from every sale. Some of the big ones include:

Freelance Market Places

Full disclosure, I am not a big fan of these types of sites. They usually offer way too little pay for way too much work. However, you can occasionally find a job that pays well. If you aren’t sure what rates you should be getting then do some research. If you are a graphic artist, learn about setting rates with the Graphic Artist's Guild Handbook of Pricing and Ethical Guidelines. If you want to venture over to some of these sites, here are a few links to get you started:

·Freelancer

·UpWork – (Elance & oDesk)

·Guru

RatRace Rebellion

This is one of my favorite sites! I refer a lot of people here because they have screened job leads as well as lists of companies that hire home based workers. Start on their home page and read the first section, “New Here?” It will tell you how to navigate the site and let you sign up for the newsletter (do that first thing!). If you want to use your computer to make money or work from home, this is a fantastic resource.

Websites that Pay Writers

I won’t reinvent the wheel here. Freelance writing guru, Carol Tice, has done a wonderful job of compiling a list of websites that pay writers $50 or more for articles and blog posts – and it is updated regularly. This is actually several lists from sever different sources but if Carol puts her stamp of approval on it you can rest assured it is legit. Her site is also an outstanding resource for freelance writers so poke around her site, bookmark it and absorb all the freelancing wisdom she has to offer.

A Word about Blogging and Affiliate Marketing

I am not a fan of using these methods of making money online, but if you decide to go with one or the other make sure you have other sources of income as well. Each of these can take a long time (sometimes a year or more) to build up to a stream of income that is even worth mentioning. Amazon and Ebay are good affiliate sites to go with and Google Adwords will help monetize your blog. There is a lot more to it, though, so if you are interested, let me know in the comments. If enough folks express an interest I’ll do a post on it.

These are great ideas, but do some searching for yourself. Go ahead, carve out your own path. It is usually best to have several streams of income, several eggs in your basket so to speak. That way if one goes through a dry spell you can stay afloat with the others.

So now it’s your turn. What are some of your favorite ways for making money online? Share in the comments below!
