Picking up where we left off:
Last week when we left as we returned to Kerville, Texas where we had several campgrounds to work before heading to Houston for our Annual Company convention and training. However, one thing we have learned since going on the road, you just never know when plans will change. Once we got to Kerville we found out that instead of working at 3 parks we were only going to work 1. So now what do you do? We have 2 weeks till our convention, not really too interested in staying in Kerville for another 2 weeks, well it’s easy…YOU TRAVEL! So we decided to take 2 weeks and just go see some of the “Tourist” sites in Texas and New Mexico.
New Mexico, here we come!
Vicki had never had the opportunity to see any of Texas or New Mexico so we started by leaving Kerville, and heading across I-10 to Van Horn, Texas for an overnight stay. On Sunday morning we got up and turned the RV North towards Carlsbad, New Mexico we decided to go up through the Canyon across RT 54 and RT 62. What a beautiful drive! The hills are not too bad but the sites are amazing looking over the valleys.
We got to our Campground in Carlsbad early afternoon on Sunday and decided to visit the Caverns on Monday. So we spent Sunday just enjoying the area. The Caverns were beautiful, it had been a number of years and as would luck would have it the Elevator was out. So the hike down the cavern was not bad, but let me tell you, coming back up was a little harder having to hike all the way out. After spending much of the morning in the Caverns we went and had lunch then we went to the living museum on the other side of town. It truly was an awesome park! I highly recommend if you ever go to Carlsbad be sure you take the time to check out the Living Desert Museum. That night we went back to the Caverns to park and watch the Sunset and take a few pics. It was an amazing evening as we sat on the hood of our car and watched the sun go down and the Desert come to life!
Alamogordo, New Mexico
Alamogordo is the home of the world’s largest pistachio and I love Pistachios! If you go stop in at McGinn's Pistachio Tree Ranch and you can not only get a picture of the world’s largest pistachio but you will get the opportunity to get pistachio’s in a variety of flavors. They have everything from Pina-Colada to Habanero flavored pistachio’s. It was a great stop on our trip!

Next while in Alamogordo, we stopped in and visited the New Mexico Museum of Space History There were some very cool exhibits outside as well as the entire history of space exploration. We learned a lot of interesting facts that we did not know and would definitely recommend you stop in if you get a chance. I want to point out that we were truly amazed at how cheap all of our tourist stops turned out to be. The Space museum is only a $5.00 admission. I guess we are used to the prices up north for tourist stops.
White Sands, New Mexico

Now there is no way you can go to this area of the country and not check out White Sands National Monument. If you have never been there it a desert setting and the sand is completely white and is very fine also. There are a number of hiking trails but be sure you bring a cooler with plenty of water. There is a gift shop when you enter that sells water and snacks but once you enter the park there is nowhere to get anything and it does get HOT!
One of the main attractions of this park is the ability to sled down the dunes. Now Vicki was able to get her sled to work several times. However, I think mine was broken. No matter how hard I tried, it would not slide properly. It was fun watching Vicki go up and down the hills and taking pictures as she did.

You can go to the top of the dunes and look out across the desert and see nothing but white sand as far as the eye can see. We were not able to do it ourselves but they do offer a Sunrise and Sunset walk with the ranger that is for taking pictures. We just did not have the time on this trip to do it. I guarantee next time we are in the area we will for sure!
Cloudcroft, New Mexico

On our way from White Sands to our next stop which is Roswell, New Mexico there is a small mountain range and on the top of this mountain range is the little town of Cloud Croft. This town truly makes you think you have stepped back in time! The town is very small and looks like something out of the late 1800’s or early 1900’s right down to the wooden sidewalks. We stopped here for lunch and enjoyed some of the quant little shops. It really is worth the stop if you are in the area. Depending on your route if you are on your way to White Sands, you can stop here and pick up a sled a lot cheaper than you can in White Sands.
Roswell, New Mexico
I have to admit I’m a diehard Sci-Fi geek so there was no way we were going to New Mexico and not have a day in Roswell, New Mexico. Now when you go to Roswell there are plenty of little shops and museums but I have to tell you that the best place to visit in this town is The Cowboy Café! I will warn you, that you should plan on 2 things when going to this restaurant. First and foremost BE HUNGRY! Secondly expect to have to wait a little bit for a table. TRUST ME IT’S worth it their food is absolutely amazing and the prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get. It’s all home cooked and the restaurant is actually small that is why you have to wait for a table. I will recommend what Vicki likes to call “HEART ATTACK ON A PLATE”. What is that you are asking, Chicken Fried BACON! I have no idea where they get the bacon but it’s some of the largest slices about 12 inches long, 3 inches wide and ½ thick. Then they Dip it in Batter and deep fry it. Then to top it off they smother it in Gravy- very, very good!
Well I guess we should wrap this up for this week, next week we will share the rest of our trip surprising how much you can see in 2 weeks isn’t it?
Till Next time, Safe travels!
