Byways That Offer The Best Scenery

Many RVers hear it—the call of the open road—the desire to explore. For some, trips are planned with a destination in mind. For others, however, the drive is the destination. Road trips provide an opportunity to enjoy different types of landscapes from the amazing vistas found nearly everywhere.
Whether you go it alone, or travel with friends or family, consider these following byways before taking your next road trip. These are a few of the most beautiful found across the country.
Big Bend Scenic Loop, Texas
Driving the Big Bend Scenic Loop takes about a day and is a great way to experience the Big Bend National Park from the comfort of your RV. The scenery is breathtaking including the Mules Ears Peak and Mariscal Mine. Plus, the indigenous animals you may see along the way include bison, prairie dogs, cougars, and roadrunners.
With several campgrounds throughout the park, there are plenty of options for places to stay. Between the three developed campgrounds, for example, there are a total of 184 sites. The Rio Grande Village Campground even has 24 sites with full hook-ups. It's very busy during the tourist season, so either make reservations or plan to be flexible.
Big MO River Ride Loop, Missouri
The Big MO River Ride Loop follows the trail forged by Lewis and Clark that traces the Missouri River and passes through St. Louis and Kansas City. You can either start in St. Louis or KC.; both cities are famous for their art, jazz, barbecue, and wine. Plus, there are miles of picturesque farmland in between.
There are several primitive camping spots in the Baltimore Bend Conservation Area near Waverly, MO. Although it has no amenities, the scenery is lovely making it great for a laid-back, peaceful experience.
Gold Coast, Michigan
With housing prices reduced for those active in the arts, Grand Rapids, Michigan has become one of the largest new art communities. It's primarily the 300 beaches that line the coast of Lake Michigan, however, that draw tourists from across the nation. During this road-trip, you can enjoy swimming, paddle boating, and dune climbing along with the scenery.
There is a huge variety of campgrounds in the Gold Coast byway. The family owned Camp Lord Willing Rv Park and Campground, for example, has 100 RV sites and is open year-round. It offers basketball, canoe and paddle boat rentals, swimming, and fishing. They even provide the bait.
Grand Circle, Utah
The Grand Circle in Utah includes popular national parks like Bryce Canyon and Zion, Arches and Canyonlands, Capitol Reef National and the Grand Canyon, and is one of the most spectacular drives you can take. For example, Arches and Bryce Canyon features multiple, naturally formed colorful arches and formations. Zion has Emerald Pools, and the Grand Canyon is one of the most recognized landmarks in the world.
Located south of the visitor center in the Fruita Historic District of Capitol Reef National Park, the developed Fruita Campground has 71 sites with a water filling and dump station at the campground's entrance. There are several primitive campgrounds in the park, as well as backcountry camping for hikers.
North Shore Scenic Drive, Minnesota
Although the Twin Cities area offers plenty of enjoyable things to do, the North Shore of the “Land of 10,000 Lakes" takes you along the shores of Lake Superior. With beaches, cliffs, the Sawtooth Mountains, waterfalls, wilderness, and lighthouses, there's something for everyone. You might even spy some of the local wildlife including black bears, moose, and elk.
There are several decent campgrounds for RVers to park while driving the North Shore. Grand Marais Campground and Marina has 300 sites including full hook-ups, public restrooms and showers, as well as a playground and hiking trails. Lamb's Way is a privately-owned campground located right on the lake in Schroeder, MN. It has full hook-up, partial hook-up, primitive and tent sites, as well as 14 cabins.
San Juan and Million-Dollar Skyway, Colorado
This area originally consisted of a series of mining communities, so it's full of abandoned mines and ghost towns. The Million-Dollar Skyway passes from Durango, Colorado into San Juan National Forest, and past Lizard Head Peak and Mount Sneffels.
